#AsMA2018 & THE FOAMed MOVEMENT

Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) has revolutionized medical education by providing incredibly up to date free and entertaining content available to all. But why does aerospace medicine seem to be behind many other specialities?

THE ASMA SCIENTIFIC ASSEMBLY

Aerospace Medical Association

Every May, experts and enthusiasts in aerospace medicine from across the globe gather to network, learn, and teach one another the latest ideas and innovations. This year I attended my first Aerospace Medicine Association (AsMA) Scientific Assembly in Dallas, Texas.

The 5 day conference was energizing. Conference attendees were a motley crew of military flight surgeons, aerospace physiologists, FAA aviation medical examiners, and NASA & ESA flight surgeons or scientists.

But I couldn't help but notice how limited the use of social media and digital sharing was. Here we are the medical specialty that NASA & Elon Musk will rely on for maintaining the health of future human martians, but we seem light years behind using simple technologies.

FOAMed & THE ORIGINS OF GO FLIGHT MEDICINE

FOAMed

In 2013, I discovered FREE OPEN ACCESS MEDUCATION (FOAM) or #FOAMed. When I searched for this in aerospace medicine, I found almost nothing. So, I decided to create it. And Go Flight Medicine was born.
